NORWICH (WBNG) – Construction is underway in Chenango County for a major solar farm project.
The project located on State Highway 23 in Norwich is projected to produce enough electricity for about 2,000 average-sized homes in that area.
All NYSEG customers will be eligible to join the farm including renters and households that would be unable to install rooftop solar panels.
“The way we like to think about it is we are spreading the sunshine,” said Katy Reed from Solar Farms New York. “All of the electricity generated from the solar farm goes into the grid, into the NYSEG grid. So everyone will benefit from the solar energy.”
Solar Farms New York has about 40 farms across New York, but with 52,000 panels expected to be installed on 79 acres of land, the Norwich site will be one of the largest in the state.
CS Energy superintendent, Jerry Gilbert, tells 12 News he expects the panels to be installed by September 30.
Solar Farms New York claims there are more benefits to the farm than just cleaner energy.
“People who sign of up Solar Farm New York accounts benefit with the five percent rebate. The town benefits from the payment in lieu of taxes and as a clean energy partner, the community benefits getting $100 into the community for everyone who signs up,” said Reed.
Norwich residents got the chance to ask questions and learn more about the project during a Town Hall meeting on Monday.
Many saying they believe it is great for the community and they are interested in trying solar power for themselves.
“People are going to save money on their power bill. I couldn’t see why they wouldn’t you know? It’s a pretty good deal,” said Mark Doliver from Norwich. “It’s green power so it’s a great thing for the community.”
Solar Farms New York says more than $1.4 million will be paid to the town of Norwich over the life of the project.
The farm is expected to be completed by early 2020.
